Gulliver's Travels

Problem: Design and Produce a contemporary interpretation of a Traditional Novel for a New Generation of visually aware readers.

Solution: The chosen novel is Gulliver's Travels by Jonathan Swift. Lemuel Gulliver (the main character in the story), an Academic with a passion for travel, makes several voyages around the world, where he discovers landforms and lifeforms, which have never been seen before. Throughout his voyages, Gulliver makes detailed descriptions of his Discoveries. For every occasion that a discovery appears in the story, the text is highlighted and illustrated in a format similar to that of an Encyclopaedia. Nautical blue swatches have been used to emphasise Gulliver’s experiences on his sea voyages. Subtle details such as the dates on the cover, highlight the chronological aspect of the story. The typesetting and format reflect a modern yet academic approach to the brief. The three paper stocks are inspired by a real Encyclopedia from the same time period as the setting of the story. This hand bound book comes in 2 Editions; A Single Edition and a 4 Part Edition, both of which are packaged and sealed for the visually aware reader.
